What is the ABC?

The Akron Bicycle Club is a recreational bicycle touring club located in Akron, Ohio. We encourage others to become interested in bicycling as a fun, healthful, safe sport for both adults and children.

The Club was formed in 1965 as an association of dedicated recreational cyclists who wanted to ride with others for companionship, support, and to learn more about the sport. We have an interesting article about the early history of the ABC that you might like to read. You also may read our Constitution on-line.

Who are we?

ABC members are employed at many occupations and range in age from adolescents to senior citizens. We live primarily in Summit, Medina, and Portage Counties (NE Ohio) with a sprinkling of members from other nearby counties. We have both beginning riders and experienced, seasoned riders.

When and where do we have rides?

We offer a variety of rides ranging from short to long, easy to challenging. All rides and meetings are free and open to the public.

During the primary cycling season of April through September we offer three or four regular weekday and evening rides, and two or three rides every weekend. Weekend rides vary in routes and distances, and generally include a longer ride. We possess over a hundred different routes on the many rural county roads and parks in the region, so there is plenty of variety. In winter, a few spirited individuals will continue to ride while the rest of us might hike, ski or exercise indoors.

We live near the CVNP and are fortunate to ride in and around the Park.

You are welcome to check our ride calendar on the left, and come out for a ride. We only ask that you wear an approved bicycle helmet.

What else do we do?

ABC members have organized activities including picnics, cross-country skiing, weekend camping trips, an annual week long bicycle tour, and winter hiking. These activities, planned and organized by club members, vary from year to year as the interest of the members change.

We have a Club newsletter named the Chain Letter, which is sent to all members. Club members are encouraged to submit articles for publication.

Another thing we do is participate in the "Adopt-A-Highway" program, picking litter up along SR-303 west of Peninsula twice a year.

Club purpose

"The purpose of the Akron Bicycle Club shall be to promote the general interests of bicycling in all its phases; to encourage and facilitate group rides, meetings, and other activities leading to increased knowledge of the physical and mental benefits of participating in the activity of bicycling. The Club shall promote the use of the bicycle in a safe and law abiding manner and shall strive to defend and protect the rights of the bicyclist under the law. The Club shall also work to insure that all transportation plans of both private and public organizations consider provisions for bicycle riders."
